Capital One Finalist for Corporate Citizenship Award

Washington, DC. (August 8, 2005) – The United States Chamber of Commerce Center for Corporate Citizenship (CCC) today announced that Capital One Financial Services (NYSE: COF), headquartered in McLean, Virginia was selected as a finalist in the category of U.S. Community Service. The award acknowledges businesses and chambers of commerce that have demonstrated ethical leadership and corporate stewardship and have made a difference in their communities.

“Through its ethical leadership and corporate stewardship, Capital One is one of our nation's pillars, advancing important social and economic goals for communities across the country,” said Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Suzanne Clark. “Examples of corporate citizenship such as these too often go unrecognized.”

U.S. Community Service Award winners are selected by distinguished leaders in the field of corporate citizenship, including past winners and the Center for Corporate Citizenship Advisory Board. Capital One was recognized as a finalist for its efforts to provide financial education to consumers. The company's program includes the following components:

  • Capital One's MoneyWi$e educational series was established in partnership with national consumer advocacy group Consumer Action. To date, the program has created and distributed more than 1.5 million free brochures in five languages and reached over 450 community based organizations through its “Train the Trainer” educational seminars; and has funded over $200,000 to 60 community groups through its financial education stipend program. Associates from Capital One also volunteer in their local communities to teach parts of the program.

  • MoneyWi$e University, a program offered at a number of university campuses, is an educational curriculum that brings the basics of personal finance and credit management to college students around the nation.

  • The company's most recent addition to its financial education program, “Stash Your Cash,” was launched in the summer of 2005 to introduce middle and junior high school students to basic money management skills and to encourage them to begin saving at an early age. As part of the program, Capital One associates visited participating schools to help students firsthand, and the company donated up to $35,000.

The U.S. Chamber will announce the winner on November 8 at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue, Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, and Harvard business Professor Michael Porter will present the awards. The celebration will be held this year in conjunction with the U.S. Chamber Board of Directors dinner.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Center for Corporate Citizenship (CCC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the environment in which businesses operate.
